As the co-founder of Eavara, I'm always preaching the importance of a consistent skincare routine. But recently, I decided to do a little experiment. I ditched my beloved night cream for one week to see what would happen.
Spoiler alert: It wasn't pretty.
Before I get into the results, let me give you some context. I've been religious about my skincare routine for years. Living in Hawaii means constant exposure to sun, salt, and wind — all of which can be tough on the skin. My nightly ritual has always included cleansing, toning, and applying a rich night cream to lock in moisture and help my skin repair itself overnight.
For this experiment, I kept everything else in my nighttime routine the same. The only change was eliminating my night cream for seven consecutive nights. I was nervous but excited to see what would happen.
The first couple of days weren't too bad. My skin felt relatively normal, probably enjoying the benefits of years of consistent care. I noticed a slight tightness in the morning, but nothing alarming.
By the third day, things started to change. I woke up with noticeably drier skin, especially around my eyes and mouth. The fine lines that usually disappeared after my morning routine seemed more pronounced. My makeup didn't go on as smoothly, and I found myself reaching for my hydrating face mist more often throughout the day.
On day four, I noticed the first pimple. It was small, but it was there to let me know my skin wasn't happy. My skin felt rougher and less plump. I started to miss the dewy glow I usually had in the mornings.
The effects became more pronounced as I entered the latter half of the week. My skin felt increasingly dehydrated, and I noticed more pronounced fine lines, especially on my forehead and around my eyes. The worst part was the dullness. My skin looked tired like it had lost its vitality.
I also noticed that my skin was more sensitive. Products that usually didn't irritate me now caused a slight stinging sensation. It was as if removing the night cream had weakened my skin's natural barrier.
By the last day, I was counting down the hours until I could slather on my night cream again. My skin felt tight, looked dull, and had developed a couple more small breakouts. The fine lines were more noticeable, and my overall complexion looked uneven and lackluster.
But the most significant change was how my skin felt.
I experienced constant mild discomfort — not painful, but always present. I realized how much I had taken the feeling of well-nourished, hydrated skin for granted.
The moment I applied my night cream again was pure bliss! It was like my skin drank in the moisture it had been craving all week. The following morning, I noticed improvement. My skin felt more supple and brighter.
It took about three days of consistent night cream application to restore my skin to its normal, happy state. The breakouts cleared up, the fine lines became less noticeable, and that healthy glow returned.
This experiment taught me several valuable lessons:
Night Cream Is More Than Just Moisture: While hydration is crucial, night creams do so much more. They support the skin's natural repair process, provide essential nutrients, and strengthen the skin barrier.
Consistency Is Key: One night of skipping your routine might not make a huge difference, but the cumulative effect over time is significant. Skincare is a long game, and consistency pays off.
Your Skin Changes Day to Day: My skin's needs varied throughout the week, likely due to factors like stress, diet, and hormones. A good night cream helps balance these fluctuations.
Prevention Is Easier Than Correction: Maintaining good skin health was much easier than correcting the issues that arose from neglecting my skin.
Quality Matters: This experience reminded me why I'm so passionate about creating high-quality, natural skincare products. The right ingredients make a world of difference.
To understand why night creams are so crucial, knowing a bit about how our skin functions at night is helpful. Our skin goes into repair mode when we're asleep. Cell turnover increases, and the skin works to undo the damage from the day's exposure to UV rays, pollution, and other stressors.
A good night cream supports and enhances this natural process. It provides intense hydration, which is crucial because our skin loses more water at night. Many night creams also contain ingredients that boost collagen production, fight free radicals, and promote cell renewal.
For example, our Pure Paradise Night Cream contains skin-loving ingredients like aloe leaf juice, which is rich in antioxidants. We also use natural oils like jojoba and coconut, which mimic the skin's natural sebum and provide deep, non-greasy hydration.
This experiment also reinforced my belief in the power of natural ingredients. When my skin was at its most sensitive during the week, I gravitated toward the gentlest, most natural products in my routine.
Natural ingredients, when chosen correctly, work in harmony with your skin. They're less likely to cause irritation and more likely to provide the nutrients your skin needs to stay healthy. This is why we're so committed to using natural, sustainably sourced ingredients in all our Eavara products.
So, what's the bottom line? While it's not the end of the world to skip your night cream occasionally, making it a consistent part of your routine can help you achieve radiant, healthy skin.
If you're not using a night cream regularly, I encourage you to give it a try. Start with a small amount and see how your skin responds. You might be surprised by the difference it can make, not just in how your skin looks but in how it feels.
Skincare is a form of self-care. Taking those few minutes each night to nourish your skin isn't just about vanity. It's about taking care of yourself, showing yourself some love, and investing in your long-term skin health.
As for me, you can bet I won't be skipping my night cream again anytime soon. Some experiments don't need to be repeated!
