5 Simple Ways to Reverse Aging this Spring
Winter does more than wreak havoc on our rain gutters: The dearth of sunshine, combined with the constant exposure to indoor air, can leave us with a lackluster complexion that only seems to highlight our years. Is it any wonder why we flock outside the moment the sun peeks through the proverbial veil?
But embracing the warmer weather without proper planning can ultimately leave you with more of those fine lines and wrinkles that winter tends to accentuate.
With these 6 anti-aging tips, however, you can both celebrate the season and restore your glow. Let’s get started:
1. Increase Your Vitamin D Intake
Vitamin D is essential to a number of functions, including getting your complexion in luminous, tip-top condition. But, while you’re probably aware that your body naturally produces Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, you’re most likely also concerned with the potentially damaging effects of UV radiation.
In addition to wearing sunscreen daily, consider enhancing your intake of Vitamin D. Oral supplements can bolster your levels, but food is a splendid medicine. Fortified orange juice is an excellent source of Vitamin D; so is milk, fatty fish (such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon), cod liver oil, and certain cereals (give multigrain cereal a try). Or, scramble up a veggie omelet that’ll boost skin, heart, and bone health: Eggs, cheese, and mushrooms brim with the sunshine vitamin.
2. Take Antioxidants
As your body’s largest organ, your skin doesn’t just need outside protection—it also needs to be nourished from within.
Besides a nutrient-rich diet that favors fruits and vegetables, consider taking antioxidant supplements.
Vitamins A, C, and E can boost cell turnover and safeguard your skin from free radical damage, while selenium—a mineral found in soil—works synergistically with other antioxidants (most notably Vitamin E) to enhance protection and improve elasticity.
3. Nosh on Berries
Speaking of nourishing from within: Do you know that what you eat has a direct impact on the quality of your skin—and what better time than spring to put this knowledge into action?
While the season brims with an abundance of fresh foods that can beautify your complexion (think: asparagus, beets, carrots, and radishes) flavonoid-bursting berries are an especially smart choice for your complexion—meaning you can nosh away on raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries, all in the name of anti-aging.
4. Use a Moisturizing Cleanser
Forgoing cleaning is a perennial no-no, as the grime and pollution our skin inevitably comes into contact with can accelerate the signs of aging. And while your partner might be fine with a basic practice of water and soap, it’s important to search for—and use—a moisturizing cleanser.
Eavara’s Botanical Facial Cleanser combines ultra-healing Tamuna oil with organic green tea, Vitamin E, and coconut oil to leave your face silky and uber-clean.
5. Hydrate
It’s imperative that you keep your skin hydrated by drinking adequate amounts of water. According to leading dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, this is partly due to hyaluronic acid—an ingredient in our skin that facilities its ability to hold water (and thus look plump and lustrous).
“When there is adequate water from the inside and out,” she says, “the skin looks healthier and more vibrant and is less prone to wrinkles.”
Aim to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces per day, and increase your intake if you’re active. Dulled by the idea of plain old water? Spice—or, rather, spring—it up with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint. The citrus will give you an extra boost of Vitamins A and C, while mint is famously soothing.
